FDA Issues Triaminic Vapor Patch Warning

Tuesday June 20, 2006
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers not to use Triaminic Vapor Patch marketed by Novartis Consumer Health due to “serious adverse events” to children who accidentally ingest the cough suppressant patch. In reaction to the warning, Novartis Consumer Health has initiated an immediate, nationwide recall of all Triaminic Vapor Patch products.

According to an FDA press statement, the camphor, eucalyptus oil, and menthol contained in the Triaminic Vapor Patch can, when chewed or swallowed, cause “a burning sensation in the mouth, headache, nausea and vomiting, to more severe and life-threatening reactions, such as seizures.”
