As our nation's first Speaker of the House, elected in 1789, Pennsylvanian Frederick Muhlenberg, is remembered partly as the key player in a popular urban legend involving the failure of a bill that would have declared German to be the official language of the United States. Current Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert of Illinois, is now under scrutiny for his possible knowledge of now-resigned Rep. Mark Foley's alleged exchange of sexually explicit emails with teenage congressional pages.
