IRS Seeks Owners of $110 Million in Tax Refunds

Tuesday November 20, 2007
Never got your 2006 federal income tax refund? You may be one of the 115,478 taxpayers who are due about $110 million worth of refund checks returned to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as undeliverable.

According to the IRS, the refund checks, worth an average of about $953 each, can be claimed by taxpayers after they update their mailing address with the IRS.

"Taxpayers should not miss out on getting their money back," said Richard Morgante, commissioner of the IRS Wage and Investment Division in a press release. "The IRS makes it as easy as possible for taxpayers to update their addresses and claim their refunds."

To help taxpayers find out if they still are due a tax refund, the IRS provides a handy and secure online tool appropriately called "Where’s My Refund?" To prove their identity on "Where’s My Refund?" taxpayers need to provide their Social Security Number, filing status and amount of refund shown on their 2006 return.

If you need to update your address with the IRS, you can do so by downloading and filing IRS Form 8822 (.pdf), Change of Address, or by calling the IRS at 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676) to order the form.
