Household Income Up but Poverty Unchanged, Census Reports

Friday August 29, 2008
Annual household income in the U.S. increased for the third straight year in 2007, reaching $50,233, according to a new report from the U.S. Census Bureau. The poverty rate, however, remained virtually unchanged at 12.5 percent, or 37.3 million people in poverty in 2007, up from 36.5 million in 2006.

The number of Americans without health insurance fell slightly from 47 million (15.8 percent) in 2006 to 45.7 million (15.3 percent) in 2007.

Among men and women who worked full time throughout 2007, the ratio of earnings of women was 78 percent of that for men.

These findings and so much more about us comes from the Census Bureau report, Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance Coverage in the United States: 2007 (.pdf).
