Double Eagle Gold Piece to Fly Again

Tuesday December 2, 2008

The legions of coin collectors who consider the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle $20 gold piece the most beautiful coin in the world will be grabbing their wallets to buy specimens of the U.S. Mint's 2009 ultra high relief Double Eagle gold coin.

Sales of the 24-karat (.9999 pure) gold 2009 high relief version of the $20 Double Eagle are scheduled to begin early next year, at a price based on the prevailing worldwide price of gold at the time.

Other than sculpting Saint-Gaudens’ classic design in ultra high relief, the only changes to the original 1907 version include the addition of four stars to represent the 50 states and the inscription “IN GOD WE TRUST” to the reverse (tails side) of the coin.

"This gold ultra high relief coin, evoking Augustus Saint-Gaudens' 1907 Double Eagle with Liberty striding forward, is one of the world's most beautiful coins," said Mint Director Ed Moy in a press release. "One hundred years from now, I believe the 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin will be remembered as the birth of the greatest American century in coin-making history."
