The Deadlines: As announced by the USPS, the last recommended date for mailing Parcel Post packages to overseas military destinations (APO/FPO) - including Afghanistan and Iraq -- is November 12. First-class and Priority Mail letters and cards should be mailed no later than December 10. Packages sent via Express Mail Military Service should be mailed by December 18 to ensure delivery by Christmas Day.
The Discounts: Continuing to show its tradition of supporting the armed forces, the USPS will send mail to overseas military addresses at domestic mail prices. An additional discount is being offered for those sending packages to the troops via the Priority Mail Large Flat Rate Box option. Packages sent to APO/FPO addresses overseas in Priority Mail Large Flat Rate Boxes will shipped for $12.50, a saving of $2.00 over the standard domestic mail price of $14.50. Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes are available free at any Post Office.
The Military Care Mailing Kit: Families and friends of those serving in the armed forces overseas can also order -- at no charge - the popular Military Care Kits. The mailing kits can be ordered by phone by calling 1-800-610-8734 and asking for the Military Care Kit. Each kit includes two "America Supports You" large Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes, four medium-sized Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes, six Priority Mail labels, one roll of Priority Mail tape and six customs forms with envelopes - all for free.
