Get a Horse! And Make it a Wild One

"Congress finds and declares that wild free-roaming horses and burros are living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West; (and) that they contribute to the diversity of life forms within the Nation and enrich the lives of the American people ..." - The Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act, (P.L. 92-195)

Since its inception in 1973, the Wild Horse and Burro Adoption program administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has become one of the U.S. government's most popular conservation programs. According to BLM, Americans have adopted over 169,000 wild horses and burros removed from public lands.

Adopt Wild Horses & Burros on the Internet
In keeping with the Clinton Administration's push for E-government, Internet users can view and even bid to adopt wild horses and burros online at the BLM's Wild Horse & Burro Internet Adoption Web Site. Internet adoptions are held periodically throughout the year with the next bidding scheduled in June or July. All bidder and owner qualifications, instructions, and online bid form can be found on the Wild Horse & Burro Internet Adoption Web Site

No Free or Cheap Government Land
No matter what you may have heard or read, there is no such thing as "free land from the government." There is no federal homesteading program and land the government does sell is sold only at market value.
