US Naval Observatory
Dateline: 08/28/98
At exactly 4:49 AM (16:04 Universal Time) the first sunlight of the year 2000 will rise on Kahuitara Point on Pitt Island in the Chatham Islands, a dependency of New Zealand. So, will the residents of Kahuitara Point the first people on earth to see the new millennium? Yes, but not until the morning of 1/1/2001, the real first day of the next millennium according to the Nation's Timekeepers at the US Naval Observatory.
Since 1830, the Naval Observatory has carried out its mission of providing precise time. So, what time is it right now according to the Observatory's Master Clock? And, just how accurate is your PC's internal clock? Well, check your PC's system clock against the Master Clock. Ten minutes fast or slow isn't bad. PC clocks are not noted for accuracy. In fact, many laboratories around the world depend on the Naval Observatory time to calibrate their PCs' clocks.
Back to the millennium. How long 'till it gets here? Use the Countdown to the New Millennium page to find out exactly. The Observatory also provides a great millennium FAQ page to answer questions like...
- What is the first place where the Sun rises on January 1, local time?
- What is the first place in the United States where the Sun rises on January 1, local time?
- Where is the line of sunrise at 0h UT on January 1?
Finally, for us Internet folk, the Naval Observatory provides much of its fascinating and useful data online, such as...
- Complete Sun and Moon Data for One Day (for anywhere in the world.)

All the web links in this feature worked the day I uploaded this page. Promise.
But, since I do not usually go back and verify links in feature articles,
some links, like even good bologna, will go bad with time. So, if you find
a link in this feature that won't work, and you really, really want to find
it, just email me, and
I'll try to find the new link for you. Thanks for your understanding.
