USPS Working to Reconnect Katrina Victims With Their Mail

Mail service currently suspended to devastated zip code areas

By Robert Longley, About.com

Dateline: Sept. 2, 2005

The US Postal Service reports that as of Sept. 2, 2005 post offices will not be accepting or delivering any class of mail -- from any source -- addressed for delivery within the zip codes most seriously affected by the Hurricane Katrina disaster. The zip codes ranges affected by the mail suspension include: 369, 393, 394, 395, 396, 700, 701 and 704.

USPS officials report they are currently working on plans for the future delivery of mail already mailed and addressed for delivery to the affected ZIP Code areas.

Complete updated details, including affected zip code ranges in Mississippi and Alabama can be found on this USPS Website.

USPS Remains Committed to Reconnecting Victims With Their Mail

The Postal Service emphasizes that it remains resolved to re-connecting displaced and evacuated Hurricane Katrina victims with their mail.

As it begins to restore mail delivery in areas where it is safe to do so, the Postal Service is asking customers unable to receive delivery at their permanent address to file a change of address.

The quickest and easiest method? Electronically.

An Online Emergency Change of Address Web page has been established to assist Katrina victims at https://moversguide.usps.com/mgservice/ECOA

It's quick, convenient, secure, and will start the process of redirecting mail to your new address within 24 hours. Change of addresses can also be processed by calling 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777).

Hurricane victims in areas without telephone service or internet access should go to the nearest post office, complete a change-of-address form, and submit it to a postal Retail Associate at the counter or mail it — it's postage free.
